Meet the Teamsters   Local 135 officers.

How to Organize with Local 135

The first step to organizing your workplace is to contact the Local Union office in your area.

Step 2 is to determine what your appropriate bargaining unit would be.

Step 3 is to build an in plant organizing committee of employees who are interested in Teamsters Union representation. Your committee should be no less than 10% of your bargaining unit.

Step 4 is to distribute union cards through your committee to the entire bargaining unit, by law, at least 30% of your bargaining unit must sign union cards in order for an election to be required. However, we prefer to have at least 60% of the cards signed by the unit. Signed Authorization Cards are confidential.

Step 5 is to petition the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for an election to be conducted. Approximately 6-8 weeks later, the NLRB will conduct a secret ballot election at your company. A requirement of 51% of the employees who vote must vote "YES" for Teamster Union representation in order for the NLRB to certify the Teamsters Union as the representative for the bargaining unit.

Step 6 is to prepare for upcoming contract negotiations. A contract proposal meeting will be held with the entire work force, all proposals will be reduced to writing and employees will vote to elect their negotiating team make up of your coworkers. Your negotiating committee along with your Business Representative from Local 135 will negotiate your first Union Contract. All contract offers will be brought back to the entire bargaining unit to vote to accept or reject the employers offers
