UPDATE:
UPS 81st St. Change of Operations

On Friday, February 16, UPS will operate its last day sort at 81st St. due to a change of operations relocating the day sort to Plainfield.

On Monday, February 19, all part-time day sort members at 81st St. will be able to follow their work to Plainfield on a Sunday through Thursday schedule. All 81st St. day-twilight combo members will be staying at 81st St. and moving to midnight-preload or twilight-midnight.

At the beginning of the year, UPS provided notice of a change of operations to Local 135. The day sort at 81st St is moving to the Plainfield hub. Local 135 filed a grievance on behalf of all affected members on February 14 regarding the timeline of the change of operations.

Local 135 Vice President and Business Agent Paul Dwigans negotiated the terms of the change of operations with UPS management throughout the month of January to minimize disruption to members’ lives.

Q&A: UPS 81st St. Change of Operations

How will the change of operations affect part-timers working on the day sort at 81st St?

The day sort is being moved from 81st St. to Plainfield Hub. All part-time day sort members will have the opportunity to follow their work. The day sort at Plainfield is on a Sunday through Thursday schedule.

How will the change of operations affect combos working day-twilight at 81st St?

The company claims that there are no combo day-twilight jobs available at Plainfield. Local 135 is investigating and contesting this claim. Starting Monday, February 19, combo day-twi members have the option to work midnight and preload or twilight and midnight at 81st St.

When did the union learn about the change of operations?

At the beginning of 2024, UPS notified the union of the change of operations. We began negotiating the terms immediately.

Did UPS violate the contract?

It is the position of Local 135 that UPS violated Article 38 of the National Master Agreement by starting the 45 day clock upon providing notice of the change of operations, instead of starting the 45 day clock when the changes were written and agreed to by both parties, on January 31. The Local has filed a grievance on behalf of all affected members.
